Local San Francisco band, Culann's Hounds, have produced a lively debut album, with a nice mix of tunes and songs. One of [the] standout tracks is 'The Maids of Mitchelstown,' a sweet and gentle version, with very tasty work from Kevin McDonough on flute, Steve Gardner on fiddle, and Conall O?Raghallaigh on uilllean pipes. The album also has genuinely good takes on 'The Swallowtail Jig,' 'Ballinasloe Fair & Cherish the Ladies.' 'Lady's Fancy' wanders through some Breton and Galician territory before settling into an Irish context.
'Spancil Hill' shows Frank Jordan in fine voice and he does a good job on 'The Fields of Athenry.' 'O'Keefe's Slide & The Monk's Jig' is an admirable and creative combination. Another good set closes the album, 'The Wind the Shakes the Barley,' 'The Musical Priest & Farewell to Erin,' with rhythmic guitar accompaniment from Michael Kelleher. This is a very solid debut album with tight playing and arrangements from these local favorites whose live shows are very entertaining. - Tom Clancy ... |
